Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users using such drugs must be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Experts believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified rebound.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a powerful return of cravings.

"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Use

Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural support.
