Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in several interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, following the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" observation after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of play – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term future in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
